SUMMARY:Winter Warmth Potluck
DESCRIPTION:CamdenCAN\, in association with the Anti-Poverty Work Group\, are hosting a Winter Warmth Potluck at Camden’s First Congregational Church in Camden from 530 to 8 pm on Thursday\, January 29. We’re holding the event to celebrate the warmth and wonder of old friends and new\, hoping we can spread the joy of living here in midcoast Maine. Folks from CamdenCAN and the Anti-Poverty Work Group will be on hand to talk of current projects and solicit ideas for future activities. There’s lots of work to be done to improve our community—come join us to help decide our mutual ways forward. We’ll have informal conversations about climate instability\, ways we can help one another reduce energy/electricity costs\, and tighten our communal bonds via neighborhood pods. The potluck is free and open to all. If you’d like to bring a dish to share that would be great—you don’t have to sign up to do so\, but if you’d like to sign up to do so follow this link: https://www.PerfectPotluck.com/ELRY9677. If you’d like more information about the event email camdencan2025@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Camden’s Forests
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 6:30-7:45 pm\, Camden Public Library. Camden Talks Climate event: Camden’s Forests as a Lens on Maine’s Changing Climate with Ivan J. Fernandez\, Professor Emeritus and Climate Research Scientist in the School of Forest Resources. \nCamden is blessed to share a border with a well-forested state park. While we’re sure you knew about the park\, do you also know that\, in addition to being a treasured natural resource\, our state park also provides solutions to many of the challenges presented by a warming world? \nIn the last Camden Talks Climate event of the spring\, Fernandez will explore how climate change affects forests\, including the ways in which forest management responds to those changes\, and how forests contribute to climate solutions. He’ll also briefly discuss the 2024 quadrennial update of the Maine Climate Action Plan—Maine Won’t Wait 2.0—including its seven overarching strategies for Maine action on greenhouse gas mitigation\, climate adaptation\, and building resilience in our communities and ecosystems.

SUMMARY:How to Instigate Action
DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library. \nCamden Talks Climate “How to Instigate Action on Climate Change\,” with Kerry Emanuel\, MIT Professor Emeritus of Atmospheric Science at MIT. Property insurance rates are skyrocketing in Camden and nationwide due in large part to catastrophes like wildfires in Los Angeles and hurricanes in Florida that are caused or worsened by climate change. Yet the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change continue to rise\, and little is being done to adapt infrastructure to handle the change. Emanuel argues that this inaction and\, even worse\, migration from less risky to more risky places\, are natural consequences of tax and insurance systems that subsidize building and rebuilding in high-risk locations. Professor Emanuel will present ideas for reversing this migration and sensible measures to deal with our changing climate.
