SUMMARY:Resilient Reading Group Feb 24
DESCRIPTION:We humans\, and the rest of the planet\, exist in a tightly bound web of interconnections. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Resilient Reading Group. \nThe reading group meets on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. If you have questions or would like to participate\, please email camdencan2025@gmail.com. \nThe ultimate goal of these book discussions is to inform as well as expand one another’s understandings of the moment we are living in. One of the greatest actions to take to improve our current situation is to talk about it\, as well as forge new alliances and build community. Come join us—let’s see what we can do to thrive in these challenging times. \nWe’ll be selecting our next reading book at our upcoming meeting.

SUMMARY:Winter Warmth Potluck
DESCRIPTION:CamdenCAN\, in association with the Anti-Poverty Work Group\, are hosting a Winter Warmth Potluck at Camden’s First Congregational Church in Camden from 530 to 8 pm on Thursday\, January 29. We’re holding the event to celebrate the warmth and wonder of old friends and new\, hoping we can spread the joy of living here in midcoast Maine. Folks from CamdenCAN and the Anti-Poverty Work Group will be on hand to talk of current projects and solicit ideas for future activities. There’s lots of work to be done to improve our community—come join us to help decide our mutual ways forward. We’ll have informal conversations about climate instability\, ways we can help one another reduce energy/electricity costs\, and tighten our communal bonds via neighborhood pods. The potluck is free and open to all. If you’d like to bring a dish to share that would be great—you don’t have to sign up to do so\, but if you’d like to sign up to do so follow this link: https://www.PerfectPotluck.com/ELRY9677. SUMMARY:Resilient Reading Group--Life After Doom\, Final Chat
DESCRIPTION:The second book in CamdenCAN’s Fall/Winter reading series is Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart/Brian D. McLaren. Far from an apocalyptic nightmare\, this work\, written by a former English professor and pastor\, offers a life-affirming approach to living in difficult times. “Life After Doom is for everyone who has reached a point where not facing their unpeaceful\, uneasy\, unwanted feelings about the future has become more draining than facing them. It’s for anyone who understands that we’ve entered a dangerous time and we need to prepare ourselves to face that danger with wisdom\, courage\, character\, and compassion.” \nOur 1/27/26 meeting will be the last on Life After Doom\, and we will also be deciding if we will continue on with other books for late winter and spring. Come join us to decide our way forward.

SUMMARY:Climate Disasters Can Happen Fast - Are You Ready?
DESCRIPTION:Camden Talks Climate\, Climate Disasters Can Happen Fast: Are You Ready? Climate disruptions are generating multiplying disasters—from extreme floods and wildfires to super-charged hurricanes. Even areas once considered “climate havens” are facing major events. Learn more about how your family can prepare in a presentation by Sophie Piconi\, Executive Director for the American Red Cross Northern New England Region/Midcoast and Central Maine. The first people to respond to disaster are often neighbors helping neighbors. Skye Ljungberg\, an intern with Maine Climate Science Information Exchange\, will share ideas from model programs where neighborhood pods prepare in advance to checkin on each other and share resources. Handouts will be available\, and the session will be recorded. \nThis program takes place in person and will also be streamed on Zoom. To watch virtually\, register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_uNaznT1bRRaRpPWJCONP_g \nThis Camden Public Library presentation is co-sponsored by CamdenCAN and supported by a state Community Resilience Partnership grant to the towns of Camden and Rockport.

SUMMARY:Energy Coach Training
DESCRIPTION:Energy Coaching–A Way to Help Your Neighbors\nThe Energy Coach initiative is a two-year pilot that targets the #2 source of emissions in midcoast Maine: our buildings. \nThe program’s primary purpose is to demonstrate that personal assistance can increase acceptance of carbon-cutting actions by looking at the whole house and making the process easier for consumers. The program will assess best practices\, focus on the challenges faced by Rockport and Camden’s underserved populations\, and help demonstrate how the program is scalable for other Maine communities. \n\n  \nHow the Coaching Process Works\nEnergy Coaches are a free person-to-person service to Camden and Rockport residents. \nCoaches are volunteers whose role is to facilitate the process of home energy updates by helping residents take the first step and by making it easier to take a project all the way to completion. Coaches are trained by industry professionals such as All Around Home Performance\, Efficiency Maine\, HeatSmart Alliance of Massachusetts\, and local professionals in the field. \nCoaches are backed up by expert sources for questions outside of the coaches’ training. They share knowledge in a peer learning approach. In addition\, the program is developing a trusted list of local professionals\, based on our experiences with them\, that we can share with our clients. \nWhat a Coach Does \n\nReviews options and translates terms that are unfamiliar\, including information on energy saving strategies such as energy audits\, weatherization\, heat pumps\, and solar;\nProvides information on financial incentives;\nGuides a resident through the energy and building review process\, sets expectations\, and follows up at each stage;\nWrites a comprehensive visit report;\nCollects data on coach-assisted actions taken;\nEngages in ongoing training and information sharing with other coaches;\nFollows up as needed to assist in plan implementation.\n\n\nWant to get involved?\nClick here to volunteer as an Energy Coach\nClick here if you’d like a coach to visit your home.

SUMMARY:Camden’s Forests
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 6:30-7:45 pm\, Camden Public Library. Camden Talks Climate event: Camden’s Forests as a Lens on Maine’s Changing Climate with Ivan J. Fernandez\, Professor Emeritus and Climate Research Scientist in the School of Forest Resources. \nCamden is blessed to share a border with a well-forested state park. While we’re sure you knew about the park\, do you also know that\, in addition to being a treasured natural resource\, our state park also provides solutions to many of the challenges presented by a warming world? \nIn the last Camden Talks Climate event of the spring\, Fernandez will explore how climate change affects forests\, including the ways in which forest management responds to those changes\, and how forests contribute to climate solutions. He’ll also briefly discuss the 2024 quadrennial update of the Maine Climate Action Plan—Maine Won’t Wait 2.0—including its seven overarching strategies for Maine action on greenhouse gas mitigation\, climate adaptation\, and building resilience in our communities and ecosystems.

SUMMARY:Cleaner Green Homes
DESCRIPTION:Rockport Public Library\, Cleaner Greener Homes: Climate Friendly Buildings. Speakers: Andrew Frederick\, Founder\, Croft Builders; and Danny Salomon\, Habitat for Humanity\, Second Story Builders. This talk will explore local approaches to building climate-friendly housing\, as well as the state’s climate plan for sustainable buildings and housing. We’ll talk about building zero-carbon houses with low-carbon materials\, as well as “circular construction”—an alternative to traditional demolition that repurposes and reuses building materials. By highlighting these strategies\, the discussion will showcase how individuals can help expand housing while being planet-friendly.
